Too often we see the negative effects of a poor body image on self-esteem. The demand to look a certain way has taken its toll on society, young and old. Are you among those in society who struggle with negative perceptions of your body? Let’s attempt to reverse these unhealthy thoughts by focusing on some important facts about body image and not allowing it to affect your self-esteem.
“Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder.” Have you ever heard this saying? Well it is true. Everywhere you go each particular culture has a different perception of what is beautiful. Some cultures find thick, shapely women to be beautiful. Other cultures find thin, athletic women to be beautiful. Some cultures admire broad noses while others prefer thin noses. The list goes on and on.
Don’t allow others perception of body image to lower your self-esteem. Instead, think for a second. If you walked around everyday worrying about what other people thought about the way you look, what good would that do since everyone has their own preferences? Living your life this way would be wearisome and can only cause your self-esteem to fall lower and lower. You would never be content with yourself.
If what others may be thinking of you is negatively effecting your perception of your body image it is time to ignore this mindset and build your self-esteem. Look at yourself in the mirror everyday and say, “I am beautiful just the way I am and say it with conviction. Then look at yourself and make a mental list or write down all the features and qualities that you admire about yourself. Every time you start to think about yourself negatively think about the list you made. As you begin to look at your body image in a positive light watch as all the bad feelings you have been plagued with for years start to disappear. Your self esteem will begin to grow and you will become a more confident individual.
One other important point to consider is that our God is a perfect God. Therefore, everything he has made is perfect. In fact, our body is created in his image. If this is the case, there is absolutely no reason to question why he made your body the way he did or to allow negative body image to affect your self esteem. You are a beautiful, perfect creation of God. So praise God like King David did at Psalms 139:14 by saying, “I shall laud you because in a fear-inspiring way I am wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, as my soul is very well aware.” David acknowledged how perfectly God made him and showed his appreciation of self by praising him. You can show much esteem as well by thinking confidently of your body image.
Yes, by viewing your body image in a positive way through your eyes and God’s, you can have a healthy view of your body image. This new found appreciation of yourself will do wonders for your self esteem. You will become even more self-confident and it will show on the outside, making you appear even more beautiful.
